Jenna Jensen is a new candidate running for councillor in the District of Sparwood.

A mother of two young children, Jenna Jensen is a born and raised District of Sparwood resident, who wants to take the next step up from volunteer work and sitting on committees to trying to make a difference with the District of Sparwood’s youth as a city councillor.

“Running for council is something that I have wanted to do for quite awhile. I’ve always been interested and passionate about the community and helping out,” said Jensen.

She has previously served on the executive committee for the Parents Advisory Council at Frank J. Mitchell Elementary School for four years, been the coordinator/organizer for the annual Canada Day celebrations, a regular volunteer at Sparwood’s Coal Miner Days celebration and secretary at the Sparwood Treehouse Daycare.

As a mom, Jensen wants to promote a better atmosphere for the District of Sparwood’s youth and to provide them with more opportunities for taking leadership roles.

“I didn’t have the opportunity to do much volunteer work in my youth,” admits Jensen, “but had there been the chance to, I would have. I’ve seen teens in Sparwood make a difference by taking on the Halloween 4 Hunger campaign and other things. I’ve freelanced for The Free Press, so I’ve covered a lot of stories to that effect and I think it would be good for us to give them the credit and opportunities to take some leadership.”

Jensen thinks the time to run is right, now that her kids are older — aged nine and six — and she wants to continue the legacy of her grandfather who served for 30 years on the local school board.

“I want to be the person that people can come to and voice their opinions to and feel comfortable to be around,” said Jensen.
