Elk Valley RCMP have released some safety tips to the public in light of a potential door-to-door sales scam moving through the area.

RCMP were alerted by several residents that particularly aggressive salespeople were canvassing homes in the Elk Valley and it was believed that these attempts at contact were fraudulent in nature.

Police are advising homeowners to avoid opening their doors to strangers or people without credentials, and to verify the charity or business prior to making any donations or contractual agreements. Verification can be completed by contacting the charity or business directly or through the Better Business Bureau.

Residents who meet with an aggressive salesperson should contact local RCMP.

According to Elk Valley RCMP Sgt. Svend Nielsen, legitimate charities typically call local RCMP, or the local district or city office, to advise that they are in the area prior to calling at the door.

Questions can be directed to Elk Valley Regional RCMP in Fernie at (250)-423-4404 or in Sparwood at (250)-425-6233. In case of an emergency, dial 9-11.
