Elkford deer count needs volunteers

The Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee in Elkford will be conducting a second deer count on February 21 from 4 to 5 p.m.

The Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee in Elkford will be conducting a second deer count on February 21 from 4 to 5 p.m. The count will require several volunteers in order to obtain an accurate count. The first count was conducted in September. Three counts will be conducted in total as a way of determining a consistent and accurate number – with the third and final count on April 16. The town will be divided into sections with each group scanning the various sections simultaneously to ensure that a single deer is not counted multiple times.
The previous deer count in October 2011 indicated that there are approximately 12,875 deer per square km in Elkford. The Urban Deer Management Committee is aware that various factors may have contributed to inaccuracies in the count; therefore, two more counts will be conducted in order to obtain a consistent and accurate number.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Duncan McDonald, Superintendant of Public Works, at 250-865-4025 or dmcdonald@elkford.ca.
