Rental accommodations are hard to come by in the Elk Valley, so any time a project comes on line that will provide them, it’s good news.

The Elk Valley Family Society EVFS announced Friday, August 25, 2023 that it is now taking applications for its Timbers Landing Housing Project in Sparwood. This is a four-storey, 30-unit mixed market building with one, two and three bedroom units.

In a press release, Timbers Landing said the building is geared towards low-to-moderate income households with a mix of affordable and market rental units. Target occupants are families with a focus on single-parent families, low-income individuals, and persons with disabilities seeking independent living. Four of the units feature barrier-free designs for accessibility. Priority for tenancy is based on identified needs.

“Housing is an issue everywhere, but especially in the Elk Valley where our limited supply and aging housing stock make it very difficult to find adequate accommodations,” said Katey Taylor, Executive Director of Elk Valley Family Society. “We’re excited that after three years of effort, we are bringing this much-needed housing to the community and laying the foundation for our next development projects in the Elk Valley.”

The project has been developed with the financial assistance of several partners, including BC Housing, the District of Sparwood, CMHC, the Columbia Basin Trust and Teck. The development and construction team includes New Commons Development, Zeidler Architecture and Krawford Construction. The building is located at 431 Pine Ave in Sparwood. Construction is being completed, with the first tenants moving in later this Fall..
