A budding Fernie musician has crafted a debut EP, and they’d like you to hear it.

Nesta Malcolm grew up in Fernie, and said his soon-to-be released EP, ‘Journals’ in inspired by his life in the town.

“This is my personal experiences,” he said. “They’re love songs, so that always helps. I was writing about things that happened to me in Fernie growing up and going to high-school here.”

Malcolm, who is 19, is back in Fernie after a year studying audio engineering and music production in Kelowna.

‘Journals’ is made up of five tracks, one of which was part of his studies, but they’re all a result of him pouring his heart and soul into his craft. Malcolm wrote and produced everything on the EP.

He described Journals as being electronic pop, which was a natural progression from a love of electronic and dance music when he was younger.

“I’ve been making music for a long time, I started when I was 12.

“I just googled how to make music. I found a bunch of different things and free programs, and I’ve just kept getting better and making what I like at the time.”

He said he drew musical and creative inspiration from American musicians Charlie Puth and Lizzy McAlpine (for writing, singing and producing their own music), Malcolm said Journals is meant to be his own style and sound. “I think I am trying to make something new.”

“I put a lot of time into it, it’sd hard crafted with lots of detail. I want people to hear it and experience the world through my eyes, and hopefully they like it.”

‘Journals’ by Nesta Malcolm will be available on streaming services like Spotify and iTunes from August 12.
