The City of Fernie’s current five year financial plan includes annual allocations of $15,000 to fund discretionary grant requests.
The call for applications for the 2012 budget year was posted on the City’s website and published in four editions of The Free Press. Applications for funding included requests totaling $44,600.
The Discretionary Grants Committee for 2012 recommended grants totalling $12,600 with $2,400 remaining available to fund requests that may come forward throughout the year.
Council approved the Committee’s recommendations at the January 9 regular council meeting. The following is a list of the allocations.
This year’s funding allocations
Community EcoGarden will receive $500 to fund the purchase of garden tools and watering equipment.
Earth Week Fernie was allocated $1,000 to help fund expenses associated with hosting events that will appeal to community members of all ages and interests.
Fernie Heritage Cemetery Restoration Society will receive $800 to undertake the restoration of the Heritage portion of the cemetery.
Fernie Kids Club Society was granted $500 to allow the Society to provide subsidies to families who are in need of financial assistance with respect to licensed afterschool care and programs.
Fernie Mountain Bike Club was allocated $1,200 to help fund a paid trail crew to coordinate the restoration, development and maintenance of the mountain bike trail sytems and the bike jump/skills park.
Fernie Rod & Gun Club will receive $1,200 to help fund costs associated with the establishment of a winter Junior Olympic Archery Program.
Ghostrider Adventure Camp was granted $800 to cover the cost of sending two children to a one-week residential outdoor program.
OPT BC (Options for Sexual Health Clinic) will receive $1,300 for costs related to a “mock clinic” for grade nine students and to provide a “paystub campaign” for participating Fernie businesses.
Salvation Army Food Bank was allocated $1,500 for donation to the 2012 Food Bank campaign.
Wildsight Elk Valley Branch will receive $1,000 to help offset costs associated with operating the downtown office.
Fernie Mountain Film Festival was granted $800 to fund the cost of renting the Fernie Community Centre for the three night event.
Fernie Mountain Market Fun Fest will receive $1,000 to help fund a family focused day event that will include performances by local children’s entertainers and musicians.
Reel Canadian Film Festival was granted $1,000 to help fund the operation of the fourth annual festival.
