Fernie has had a change of the guard at the fire hall, with Brendan Morgan stepping up to the position of Acting Chief with Fernie Fire and Emergency Services, and Bill Pittman joining the city as Deputy Fire Chief.

The changes come as long-time Chief Ted Ruiter moves on to a new position in Sooke, on Vancouver Island.

According to a release from the city, newly-minted Chief Brendan Morgan brings two decades of fire service experience and a dedication to excellence and service to the Community of Fernie to this position, while Deputy Chief Bill Pittman joins the city as an experienced senior leader in Fire and Emergency Services having most recently served as Deputy Chief with the Hamilton Fire Department.

“A change in the Chief position is never easy, which is why we are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Brendan Morgan and Bill Pittman to continue developing the senior leadership team at the City,” said Mayor Ange Qualizza.

Acting Chief Morgan said he was excited to be taking on the role.

“Fernie Fire and Emergency Services has a long history of dedicated work protecting the community, and I’m looking forward to continuing the work to advance the department,” he said.
