The Fernie Mountain Bike Club (FMBC) is going virtual with their Fernie Virtual Enduro 2020 race to keep local pedals spinning.

Over a six week period, the event invites locals to take on three Strava timed races on Fernie’s enduro style trails. Competitors will have a two week window to complete each race, with the first kicking off on July 10 and running until July 24. The second race takes place from July 25 until August 7, and the third from August 8 until August 21.

Each route is released on Strava the day prior to launch. To qualify, racers must post screenshots of race results alongside a shred selfie, tagging Fernie Bike Events and the FMBC. At the culmination of all three races, two biking aficionado will be crowned the Fernie Enduro King and Queen for the overall fastest times. Event prizes include items from Gearhub Sports, including gear from RaceFace, OneUp, Evoc, Sram, and Abus. The first 20 participants to post their race results to social media will also receive a FMBC Fernie Enduro 2020 cap from Giv’er Shirtworks.

All participants must purchase a FMBC membership to enter.

“When we started planning for the Virtual Fernie Enduro there were no timed speed events in Fernie for summer 2020,” said Dan Savage, event organizer. “We decided to bring back the Virtual Fernie Enduro for local downhill riders to have a fun challenge and adhere to B.C. health regulations. Plus, it’s important to stay active and best to staycation.”

FMBC is also hosting a seven week course geared toward teaching tips and tricks to riders new to mountain biking. Run weekly by professional mountain biking instructors Kat Robinson and Tracey Gage from Mystic Mountain Adventures, the socially distant sessions are limited to groups of six, and are for beginner and intermediate bikers looking to make friends, explore Fernie’s trails, and learn how to better control their bikes. The course runs at $250, and addresses a variety of topics each week including cornering, climbing, wheel lifts, breaking, roll downs and more. Sessions begin at Fernie’s bike park at 6 p.m., and go over basic skills for a half hour prior to an evening of adrenaline packed riding. Sign up includes a FMBC shirt and sticker.
