Give a gift of fresh flowers this Easter

The ‘Adopt a Senior’ project hopes to reach 200 seniors this Easter

The ‘Adopt a Senior’ project by Sparwood’s Buds and Blooms will be delivering fresh flowers and gifts to seniors around the Elk Valley this Easter.

The project, which is the work of florist Sherry Benko, seeks to bring some happiness and brightness to the lives in seniors in Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie and the Pass this Easter.

Benko said she has plans to gift flowers to seniors through donations every time a special occasion comes up on the calendar. For Valentine’s Day, 114 seniors in Sparwood and Fernie were ‘adopted’, and she said she hoped to reach 200 seniors for Easter. So far, 80 seniors have been adopted, so there’s a way to go yet.

“Seniors currently are suffering because of isolation, pandemic woes and everything else,” she said, explaining that the flowers and gifts were a way to tell them people hadn’t forgotten about them, even if it was hard to visit.

For $28, locals can ‘Adopt a Senior’ in the area. The $28 covers fresh flowers, a gift, a card, taxes and delivery. Those that want to donate can nominate a senior they’d like to get a gift, or they can adopt anonymously, and give a gift to a friend they just haven’t met yet.

To donate, call Buds and Blooms at 250-425-0222, or visit the store in the Sparwood Mall. The deadline for an Easter adoption in March 26, with the flowers to be delivered on April 4. The next occasion will be mother’s day, and Benko said the deliveries would keep happening “as long as the isolation continues.”
