The grand opening of the City of Fernie’s brand new all-wheel skate park is on Thursday, May 16 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This is a family-friendly event that will include demonstrations, music, food trucks, prize draws and more.

Additionally, all Fernie residents interested in learning how to skate for the first time are welcomed to join New Line Skateparks for a free learn-to-skate session geared towards kids on Friday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Ground was broken on this modern concrete park, designed by New Line Skateparks, on June 1 2023. The new park will replace Fernie’s existing skatepark, which is now over 20 years old and has a number of identified maintenance issues and safety concerns.

This project was made possible when the City of Fernie secured $1.28 million in federal and provincial grant funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

Additional funding was provided by the Columbia Basin Trust, the Resort Municipality Initiative Program and Teck, who made a donation of $250,000.

According to the City of Fernie, the park is envisioned to be part of an outdoor hub facility for locals and tourists to “gather, connect and further explore the community.”

The City also has plans to add additional amenities such as accessible, safe and inviting viewing areas and make connections to the adjacent trail systems.

The park will be free to use and will cater to all skill levels and abilities.
