Fernie city councillor Kyle Hamilton is throwing his hat into the ring for a second term.
“I enjoy the work, and I feel that I can provide some value to the community,” he said in an interview with The Free Press.
“I hope over my first term I’ve demonstrated my commitment to the community and my determination to help this community become a more vibrant place for all citizens.”
Hamilton is the owner of local marketing agency, Birr. He has lived in Fernie full-time since 2006 and has sat on various community boards including the Arts Station and Tourism Fernie.
First elected in the 2018 municipal election, Hamilton came in at the top of the ballot, winning the most votes of any candidate in that year.
In the (almost) four years he’s served as a councillor, Hamilton said he was most proud of a motion to apply an accessibility and universal design lens to city projects going forward in an effort to make the community more usable for everyone.
“Whenever the city’s going to be building something or renovating something, universal design gets considered. It’s a key component of the dike and Elk Valley pathway, ensuring that’s accessible to all,” he said.
Going forward, Hamilton said he wanted to continue getting dirty and doing the heavy lifting of local government.
“A lot of financial issues came to light in our term, ” he said, adding that the city’s wastewater treatment issue was something he wanted to stay part of the solution on.
“That’s going to be a massive project for our community … figuring out the best way forward with that that’s both fiscally responsible and environmentally sustainable.”
Hamilton also nominated the project to secure a new fire hall for the city as another major project he wanted to be involved with.
The municipal elections take place in October this year.
