Residents of Lilac Terrace in Sparwood will have a bright new vista to enjoy when they can return to the dining room in coming months, with local young artist Darian Tremblett having painted a huge mural to brighten up the space.

The mural, called “a moment in time” depicts the mountain surrounds of Sparwood in all their majesty.

“I wanted something that would please everyone and would bring peace of mind and colour to the area … something that everyone would enjoy,” said Tremblett, who said the mural had been well-received so far.

“It allows people to have their own little escape. Its nice to know people are playing with their imagination and filling in the rest of the painting.”

The mural, which is 3.5’ by 16’ is huge, and dominated by blues and greens.

“I loved doing it,” said Tremblett, who was commissioned by Lilac Terrace administrator Michelle Matal who had noticed Tremblett’s significant talent.

“It was a big challenge for me because it was the first mural that I’ve done.

“I’m really happy with the product, it was a really fun to do. A lot of learning experiences for me in terms of scaling things up for size, and learning how to get that detail forward when its blown up like that.”

Tremblett is currently studying interior design, and says she loves all things where she can create.

“I just really like creating - whether it’s interior design, sculptures, pencil work, painting - anything where I can create.”

Lilac Terrace recently passed 20 years as a Seniors Supported Living complex, and Matal said that while residents weren’t able to gather together to celebrate (yet), a new mural in the dining room was a nice way to bring some joy and also mark the occasion.

“We wanted to do something for the residents,” she said.

Matal, who helped Tremblett with feedback on the mural as it was being painted, said it was beautiful and the residents would love it.

“Once they see this mural, it will be a good feeling.”
