New affordable housing in Sparwood is getting closer, with a project in the district set to begin construction next month.

The Elk Valley Family Society’s (EVFS) project at 400 Evergreen Crescent has been in the works for years, and just recently the lot where it will be located was cleared of trees to make way.

“Evergreen Crescent will provide 30 affordable homes for seniors, families and people with disabilities with low- to moderate-incomes in Sparwood and the surrounding Elk Valley,” said a BC Housing spokesperson.

The project was successful in securing support from BC Housing, which will supply funding through their Community Housing Fund. Details on the project cost will become available in coming weeks.

The project, which will see 30 units built on land re-zoned from parkland near Teck’s Pine Ave offices, was approved to go ahead by the district council in November last year, leaving the ball in the court of BC Housing and EVFS to get funding secured, and shovels in the ground.

According to concepts shared last year, the project will be a four-story wood-frame design with 30 units and 38 parking spaces, with a common room and outdoor amenity area. There will 11 one-bedroom units, 12 two-bedroom units and seven three-bedroom units.

Construction on the project is expected to take just over a year, with an estimated completion date of fall 2023. Details in eligibility for the new homes will become available closer to completion.

The EVFS will operate the building upon it’s completion. They also operate Veneto Place in Fernie, and Sasko Manor in Sparwood.
