Residents on 2nd and 3rd Ave. between 11th and 12th St. have been evacuated after a natural gas line was struck by city crew this afternoon.

No injuries were reported and all residents have been directed to the community center in Fernie where they will be attended to by the RCMP's Victim Services Program, the Fernie Director of Fire and Emergency Servicer Chief Ted Ruiter said.

"Everybody's fine. They were working in the alley way in that block and they just struck a gas line with a back hoe," he said.

"We're just waiting for a repair man to come and isolate the repair."

Chief Ruiter said FortisBC gas is on their way in from Cranbrook to repair the gas line, and it should be fixed within a few hours.

There are currently three fire trucks on scene and the area has been blocked off.
