Elk Valley RCMP have charged two men from Saskatchewan for being drunk in public, after they hitched a ride on a taxi early Saturday morning in Fernie.
The taxi caught the attention of the police as it left Fernie’s downtown core, with one person hanging off the roof and another crouched on the bumper.
RCMP were able to stop the taxi before it entered Highway 3, unaware of its extra passengers.
If the taxi had proceeded to travel onto the highway, it would have likely reached speeds in excess of 80 km/hr, which could have proved fatal for the passengers.
RCMP says they fully support and encourage people using taxi’s and designated drivers to make their way home from the bar, however they also encourage people to travel inside the vehicles while doing so.
