The RCMP have requested a 300 metre closure zone around the Fernie Transfer Station, which has prompted the closure of Home Hardware and the stretch of Highway in front of the Transfer Station.
Traffic is being diverted around the area on Dicken Road.
The Transfer Station is expected to remain closed for several hours at least.
The Transfer Station was evacuated around 11 a.m. after staff discovered dynamite.
