A Sparwood resident was bicycling near the Elk River on May 20 when they spotted what looked like a vehicle upside down and partially submerged in the river.

Calling it in, Sparwood RCMP, Fire Department and Search and Rescue (SAR) attended the scene.

As Sparwood SAR’s swift water rescue team approached the vehicle, they determined that there was little left of the vehicle; wheels, a frame and a drive train.

RCMP believe the vehicle had likely been in the river for quite some time, and became dislodged due to high, fast moving water.

Sparwood SAR was able to retrieve the vehicle from the river without any further incident.

RCMP would like to remind residents to use caution around areas of the river with fast moving water, and avoid river banks that could potentially give way underfoot.
