Dalia (Dal) Theresa (nee Schianni)
1924-2010
This obituary will inspire you to be good to your family and friends, offer kindness to all who cross your path, strive for success, and keep hope alive. Those things were what Dalia Guzzi was all about.
Although Dalia faced a serious stroke with great courage, and finally succumbed to pneumonia on January 6, 2010, her 85 years of life are what will be celebrated and remembered.
Dal married Dick Guzzi in 1943 and began the journey of marriage and starting a family.
Dalia was part of a circle of wonderful women, who were her very best friends. Everyone referred to them fondly as “The Coffee Ladies” and they met every day of the week. Alternating between each others’ homes, each person had a designated day to host where they shared coffee, connection, and conversation. This went on for over 50 years. Dalia’s day was Wednesday.
Over the years, Dalia made a difference in the lives of the people around her. From being an amazing daughter, mother, and Nana, to being known for her delicious Italian cooking and wonderful baking, she had a special way about her.
Dalia had a talent for making beautiful things. Her creative talents included embroidery, crocheting, and award-winning knitting. Her favorite thing to make was baby sets for the Hospital Auxiliary (where she volunteered her time and efforts for over 20 years).
Dalia was most satisfied by time spent with family and friends. For her, a visit meant the world. She enjoyed watching great episodes of CSI, especially the NY series. As the years passed, she was frustrated by her body’s inability to keep up with her, but always walked her path with patience, love, and kindness.
Dal is survived by: Her two daughters, Donna Starr and her husband Duane, and Diane Tubbs and her husband Gerry. Her granddaughter, Sharlene Starr and her husband Jeremy Lumgair. Her brother, Angelo Schianni and his wife Betty. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Dal is predeceased by her husband, Dick Guzzi and her parents, Luigi and Maria Schianni.
A special thanks to these people who helped Dal along the way of life and were very dear to her heart: Mary Guzzi, Teresa Nacarrato, Helen Clark, Louise George, Inez Bath, Norma Chudick, Kerry Marcellus, all her friends from Trinity Lodge Home Care, and the many other people who may not be mentioned here, but you know who you are.
And with great gratitude to Dr. Michal, Dr. Clark, and the staff at the Elk Valley Hospital (especially Barb Taylor) for their care and compassion.
Kindness is the greatest wisdom. And as Henry Burton wrote, “Have you had a kindness shown?? Pass it on. ‘Twas not given for thee alone, pass it on. Let it travel down the years,? let it wipe another’s tears, ?‘til in Heaven the deed appears . Pass it on.” Dalia Guzzi would agree.
It was Dalia’s wish to forgo a funeral service and a private remembrance ceremony took place with her immediate family on January 9th.
