Kenneth George Nicol
February 27, 1947 - July 14, 2023
Kenneth George Nicol, 76, died July 14, 2023, at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook.
He was born February 27, 1947, in High River Alberta, to Arthur and Marion Nicol and graduated high school in Beaconsfield, QC. After high school, he made the long trek from Quebec to British Columbia in search of employment.
In the fall of 1971, he met his soulmate, Janice Nadine Sorenson in Kalispell Montana, and they married on August 18, 1973. They moved to Cranbrook where he worked as a parts salesman for Finning. In 1980, he transferred to the Sparwood branch where he spent the duration of his 38-year career, retiring in 2013.
An avid outdoorsman and jack-of-all-trades, he was always up to something. He participated on the Sunset Ridge Ski Society for several years and helped maintain the local trails. With his contagious smile and kind heart, he enjoyed connecting with many people while on the trails. He was known as "the legend" for his strength and agility with his cross-country & skate skiing, and his grit and dedication for challenging himself on his next hike.
He loved the freedom of the mountains but more than anything, he loved his family. He was a loving, caring, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished family time, gardening with his beloved wife and daughter. Passing on a love of hockey and fishing to his son, one of his greatest joys was coaching and watching his son play hockey, and more recently watching his grandson play.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Janice, at the family home in Sparwood; son Scott Nicol and wife Christine; daughter Nancy Nicol and husband Keith; 4 grandchildren, Soren and Claire Nicol, Brynn Haley and Joseph Chester; sisters Frances (Penny) James, and her husband Robert, and Katherine Nicol; and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the palliative care nursing staff at East Kootenay Regional Hospital for their compassion and exceptional care.
