Laurence Douglas James Halverson, better known as Larry, passed away on Monday, July 16, 2018 at the age of 71. Larry was born in Banff, Alberta and lived most of his adult life in Sparwood, B.C. He was employed in a variety of positions over the course of his life including carpenter, home builder, mine excavator, woodworking entrepreneur and in the last few years of his career, he found his true passion in computer repair.

He is preceded in death by his mother, May; father, Laurence; sister, Sandy; and son, James. Of all losses Larry experienced, losing the love of his life two years ago was the most devasting to him. His wife, Joan, whom he shared 40 years of marriage and four children together was his everything.

Larry leaves behind brothers Donnie and Sheldon (Judy); sister Alannah, and children: Tara (Sheldon) Richard, Leslie Starkey, and Troy (Holly) Halverson. He is survived by eight grandchildren: Jordan (Stephanie) Richard, Connor Richard, Brody Leduc, Riley, Tyler, Lily, Carter, and Walker Halverson.

He lived his later life with a strong purpose and commitment to self help and recovery programs through Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). He celebrated 30 years of sobriety and used his experiences to mentor and support others. He had an extensive network of friends and spent many hours each week at support groups in Sparwood and surrounding areas. He also cherished time in his motorhome driving across country to visit his brother, head out on AA Round-up Retreats or simply camping in the wilderness with his friends and family.

Of all characteristics that made Larry who he is, his wonderful sense of humour stands out as his trademark. He was known for bringing laughter to people's day by telling jokes and making others smile.

Everyone is welcome to attend Larry's service which will take place at the Sparwood Christian Centre at 436 Pine Ave at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 28. The service will be followed by a celebration of life potluck luncheon in the basement of the Centre, where everyone is encouraged to bring one of Larry's favourite foods and to share in his memory by telling a story or joke.
