Ronald Alexander Matt passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, June 5th at the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie, BC.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather - 'grandpa' will be remembered fondly and missed terribly by all those who knew him.
Ron was born August 1, 1935 in Corbin, BC to Joseph and Mary Matt. He grew up in Fernie until moving to Michel, BC in his teens. Grandpa met his wife of 40 years, Janet McGovern, in Michel where they were married in 1955 and settled to raise their children.
Ron was predeceased by Janet in 1995 and his sister, Gladys McKearn (Matt) of Beloit, Wisconsin.
He is survived by his two children Sandra Matt of Victoria, BC and Joseph (Sherry) Matt of Sparwood, BC; grandchildren Michael (Georgia) Matt of Millarville, AB, Alicia Matt (John Brown) of High River, AB and Josh Matt of Sparwood; great-granddaughter Ellie Matt of Millarville.
Ron was a dedicated husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He was a third parent to his three grandchildren, never missing a single moment of their lives - they were his greatest treasure.
An original man of the valley, Ronnie fondly recalled unlimited memories. Among his favorites, included times with his Hudson Hornet - so fast no police could catch him. An avid hunter and fisherman, there were many stories about his Willys jeep, at a time when adventuring the Elk Valley first became capable with the creation of resource exploration roads.
He always said there was no country as beautiful as this. We wish we could extract all the knowledge and experiences which lived in his head.
The Matt family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the doctors in Sparwood, Fernie, Cranbrook and Trail. A big thank you as well to the many nurses, Sparwood's special dialysis team and the wonderful home care nursing team.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the Sparwood Health Centre Dialysis Unit.
