A challenging year for Sparwood; but filled with accomplishment

Looking back on 2023, it is astounding to see the accomplishments of the District of Sparwood. Despite a challenging summer with the Lladnar Creek Wildfire, we maintained a dedicated focus on project completion, progressive growth and communication. Before we celebrate successes, it is with much gratitude we extend thanks once again to everyone who assisted with the Lladnar Creek Wildfire, both on the front lines and behind the scenes. If it wasn’t for the committed efforts during the month-long event, the year-in-review may have turned out very differently.

This year has been filled with projects big and small. Most notably were the completion of Centennial Plaza and the Hot Tub. This fall, Council welcomed residents to the grand opening of the Plaza, a unique and welcoming space which has now become a highlight within the community. The new year will see the addition of furnishings, a stage and washrooms to complete the space. The Hot Tub Renovation Project saw the replacement of the old hot tub, with a new, accessible and barrier free tub. Along with the new hot tub, the project also included the replacement of the pool deck tile making the aquatics area safer and more enjoyable.

Other important work undertaken in 2023 was the Paved Pathway Project which saw 1.7 km of trails added to the active transportation network. The developed trails provide a safe walkway along Ponderosa Drive, from Carbonado Court to the Whiskey Jack entrance as well as access to the Michel cemetery and Spardell, getting pedestrians off the industrial road and away from heavy traffic. Preliminary work was undertaken on the Wastewater Treatment Plan upgrades, Lions Park Looping, Fire Hall #2 and many more exciting developments which will continue on in 2024.

Council was pleased not only to see the progress from the District, but were also happy to celebrate the completion of Timbers Landing, the construction of the Teck Administration Building and the grand opening of McDonalds. With other permits in place and work underway, Council is confident we will continue to see growth and new development in Sparwood’s future.

Another highlight of 2023 was communication. Council developed and approved the Communication Protocol which focuses on levels of community engagement contained within each report. Council also hosted two successful Town Hall Meetings which featured key topics of the District and provided opportunities for connecting with residents on matters of importance or concern. The creation of the new Council Portal simplifies public access to key information and improved accessibility and transparency. This tool will better connect the community to Council information including; meeting agendas, minutes, and videos, as well as Council Committees and Commissions.

This fall during the Union of BC Municipalities Convention, the District of Sparwood was awarded an Honorable Mention for Community Excellence in Governance for the completion of a progressive undertaking called the Organizational Excellence Initiative. This unique process aimed to bring together all employees to collaboratively identify areas for improvement, develop solutions and proactively focus on the future of the organization, its people and the services the municipality provides.

As 2023 comes to a close, Council would like to thank the residents of Sparwood. None of this could be achieved without residents who are willing to support their community by voicing their thoughts, bringing forward ideas, volunteering their time, and being engaged. We look forward to another great year ahead.

We wish you a very happy holiday season and all the best in 2024.
