Helping cancer sufferers in Elk Valley

Letter to the editor

My name is Lena and I am a Cancer connection volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society. I am happy to be among some 20,000 volunteers in BC and Yukon. I have been volunteering for about two years. As a Cancer Connection volunteer we are matched with clients, who have been recently diagnosed or going through treatment. Our clients are matched with a volunteer who has had the same or similar cancer experience.

Example: I have had both colon cancer and lung cancer, so I could be matched with someone who has one or both of these types of cancer. Our connection is by phone with only first names used and all calls are confidential. By calling our Cancer Info Service Line at 1-888-939-333 or online (cancer.ca) you can access Cancer Connection and many other support programs. Our goal is to eradicate cancer and we are committed to improving the lives of people living with cancer by helping them to find the hope, courage and resilience they need during a cancer journey. I personally find that the clients help me to remain positive as much as I feel that I help them have hope.

My motto is: One day at a time, one step at a time. Tomorrow is another day!

Lena
