Ghostriders split weekend games, claiming fifth spot in KIJHL power rankings

It was another split weekend for the Fernie Ghostriders, starting with an overtime loss to the Creston Valley Thunder Cats and a 5-2 win over the Spokane Braves on Saturday, Dec. 9.

This brings the team’s record to 16-7-1 for the season thus far, and sees them sitting in fifth place in the KIJHL’s weekly power rankings. In terms of the Eddie Mountain Division standings, Fernie are sitting in third place, just three points behind Columbia Valley and five behind Kimberley, both of whom have played two more games.

Friday night’s game against Creston got off to a solid start, with a goal from Liam Munro in the first and one from Ben Skarsen in the second.

Creston would then take control of the game, scoring a power play goal midway through the third and then tying things up with less than three minutes remaining, sending the game to overtime.

Max Chakrabarti would score the Thunder Cats’ game-winner.

Spokane’s Chase Petrella would snag the first goal of the game on Saturday, but Hudson Scrimshaw would soon answer back on the power play, securing the Ghostriders’ first of five goals of the night and initiating the annual Teddy Bear Toss, sponsored by Canadian Tire.

Scrimshaw had just been acquired by the team in a trade from the Chase Heat, via the Revelstoke Grizzlies, for defenceman Easton Zenko.

Scrimshaw had racked up four goals and six assists in his 18 games with the Grizzlies so far this season.

Gaege Johnson would get his team their second goal about a minute after Scrimshaw’s, but the Braves would tie things back up with seconds remaining in the first.

Cole Fournier and Taylor Haggerty would snag a goal each in the second period. With 35 total points so far this season, Haggerty is sitting at sixth place overall in the KIJHL’s points standings.

Malachai Peigan would score an early goal in the third, sealing the deal for a 5-2 victory.

Fernie will now head to Kimberley on Tuesday, Dec. 12 for a little preview ahead of the annual Christmas Classic games, which this year are in Kimberley on Friday, Dec. 29 and Fernie on Saturday, Dec. 30.

The Ghostriders will welcome the Golden Rockets on Saturday, Dec. 16; their final game before a well-deserved holiday break.
