Justin Peers always dreamed of being a hockey coach, but he never thought he’d achieve his dreams by the age of 22.

Peers was just voted on as Assistant GM/Coach to the Fernie Ghostriders Junior B hockey team, for the upcoming 2018/19 season.

It goes without saying that he’s excited.

“I am beyond ecstatic to be back with the Ghostriders,” said Peers.

“I’m excited for this new challenge ahead of me and looking forward to help this organization get back to their winning ways. I’m here to help all the players further their hockey careers and bring a champion back to Fernie.”

The 22-year-old said it feels surreal to be just one season removed from junior hockey, and to be already back coaching. He said that every year for years, August has always been the time when he’s strapped the skates back on for another season. But this year, he says he’s excited to help other player’s progress and hopefully have a successful season.

Peers, originally from Calgary, says he fell in love with the town after his first year with the Ghostriders.

Peers joins the team following a four-year Junior career which included part of a season with the Grande Praire Storm of the AJHL and three seasons with the Fernie Ghostriders.

In 124 career KIJHL games, Peers scored 60 goals and added 80 assists. He also added 17 points in 19 career post season games.

The Fernie Ghostriders organization says they are pleased to announce the hiring of Justin Peers.

“Justin is an enthusiastic young man that has a wealth of knowledge for the game of hockey that extends beyond his years,” said Head Coach Jeff Wagner.

“Having been a part of some good Ghostriders teams in the past, he has a good understanding of what it takes to be successful in this league, but more importantly, understands adjustments that are needed to create a championship calibre atmosphere and restructure the organization in Fernie.

“Justin has a strong work ethic, a competitive attitude and provides all the characteristics to contribute to a successful program.”

Peers admitted that he is nervous for the upcoming season, but also extremely excited.

“I want to learn as much as I can, and help out the players as much as I can,” he said.

“The main goal is to bring a championship back to Fernie, they deserve it, especially with what they’ve gone through in the past year and a bit.”
