The City of Fernie has formally appointed Brendan Morgan as the new Fire Chief and Director of Fire and Emergency Services.

Morgan, who served as assistance chief since 2017 was elevated to serve as acting chief in November 2021, following the departure of long-time chief Ted Ruiter, who took on a role in Sooke on Vancouver Island.

“I’m honoured to step into this leadership role and have the opportunity to lead the talented and dedicated Fernie Fire Rescue team,” said Morgan.

“Since my start as a volunteer firefighter over 20 years ago, I’ve been fortunate to rise through the ranks of the profession and have been privileged with the guidance of incredible mentors. I am very proud of our fire department and look forward to leading them in protecting our community.”

Fernie Mayor Ange Qualizza said that Morgan had “earned the trust and respect of his team and the community.

“We’re proud to have the opportunity to advance someone who has built a career in Fernie Fire and Emergency Services, and we look forward to having him continue to represent our organization through his great work.”
