Griz Days, which is just around the corner is making a return to form for 2022 after a mostly virtual event in 2021.

“Last year we were still very much under heavy restrictions,” said Brad Parsell of the Fernie Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the yearly winter festival.

“This year we’re trying to get back to a more normal Griz Days.”

That means a return to in-person entertainment, downtown events, and some of the favourite staples of Griz Days through the years like the Extreme Griz Competition, the Raging Elk Dummy Downhill, a Lumber Jack show and more.

Besides a few modifications, it’s just about all-systems go for the March 4-6 festival. 2022 will be the 45th Griz Days ever.

“It’s 100 percent full-steam ahead,” said Parsell. “We’re really looking forward to it.”

One change is no beer garden at Station Square (though there will be entertainment). Folks are encouraged to drop by the Fernie Legion instead, as the Legion was one of the businesses in Fernie forced shut by public health orders.

The Extreme Griz Competition – a popular day-long competition involving pancakes, axe-throwing and more – is open to all who feel up to the challenge, with all events outdoors throughout the day.

A full guide for Griz Days is available in the Griz Days magazine, which you can pick up at participating stores around town for free.
