‘Great for Fernie’: 10th annual Show N’ Shine brings out the cars and the people

Despite rain, there were 60 vehicles on display

At Fernie’s 10th annual Show N’ Shine, young Peter Sczesny found his ideal first car.

Sczesny, 12, was attending the car show on Saturday (Aug. 27) with his sister Penny and their mother, Susie Sykes.

He said the event was pretty sweet, and that his favourite car was the orange Corvette heading up the line at ‘Corvette Corner’ by the library.

“It’s just awesome,” Sczesny said, adding a word of appreciation for all the cars on show.

When asked by The Free Press if there were any cars he’d want to be his first one day, he said “Obviously that orange Chevy, it’s the best.”

The show, held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on 3rd Ave around City Hall, was hosted for the second year by the Elk Valley Cruisers (EVC).

The weather through the day ranged from mild, to drizzles, to heavy downpour.

Participants stuck it out until the end, when 16 trophies were handed out under tents.

“Considering the weather, we had 60 brave participants and in between showers, a good crowd walking through,” reads a Sunday Facebook post from the EVC.

John Kent, president of the club, was standing by his blue-glow 1973 Mustang convertible, and said the event was going great.

“We have everything from imports, like Jaguars, to all the classic vehicles,” he said, adding that there was a huge range.

Aside from showing off cars, the event was also a fundraiser for community organizations, and mechanical tools were donated to Fernie Secondary School.

Kory Stephenson was showing off his ‘77 Bandit (so-called because of its appearance in the 1977 film, ‘Smokey and the Bandit’). It’s official name is a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.

He said he bought it four years ago from a specialty shop in Florida.

“Saved up all my pennies and just did it,” he said.

“And I love it.”

Stephenson said he participated in a Fernie Show N’ Shine three years ago and won an award with the same car.

“It’s great for Fernie,” he said about the car show.

“I know the weather is miserable, but you know what, you gotta come out and support right? Support the club.”

Martin Cochrane came from Calgary to participate in the show with his modified black C7 Corvette.

He said it was good to be in Fernie for the show, and that it was nice that people came out to support local car clubs and fundraise.

“Anything that helps out the neighbourhood and helps out the people that are around, it’s always a good thing.”
